Yawo Matey (Stage name: Moïse): A Togolese Percussionist Whose Rhythms Resonate Across Africa, Canada, and the World

Yawo Matey, a percussionist of Togolese origin, embodies a rich cultural diversity through his vibrant and captivating music. Having lived in various African countries, he blends traditional percussion rhythms into a unique and compelling style. His artistic journey is shaped by a wide range of enriching experiences that have honed his talent and deep passion for music.

For three years, Yawo was part of a professional troupe in Togo, working as both a dancer and percussionist, where he developed his artistic skills and a deep connection with African rhythms. He later taught contemporary African dance in international schools in Benin, passing on his passion to the next generation of artists.

As a versatile musician, Yawo has explored diverse musical landscapes, performing as a percussionist and trombonist with various ensembles across Africa and touring with renowned artists throughout the continent. His musical journey eventually brought him to Quebec in 2005, where he joined groups such as Nomadic Massive and Alpha Thiam, both of which celebrate contemporary African music.

With artists like Nomadic Massive, Lorraine Klaasen, Laetitia Zonzambé, Sara Renelik, Rebecca Jean, Isaac Neto, Guy Mapoko, Alpha Thiam, Nadine Altounji, and Wesli, Yawo has performed at internationally acclaimed festivals such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Global Hip Hop Festival in Toronto, Canada's folk festivals, and other major events across Europe and Latin America—offering audiences immersive and powerful musical experiences. He also collaborated with Cirque du Soleil, contributing his signature rhythms to exceptional performances.

As a music educator, Yawo has not only shone on stage but has also led percussion workshops in Quebec high schools, in partnership with the Quebec Ministry of Culture’s Artists in Schools program. His passion for music and dedication to sharing his art with the community make him a dynamic and inspiring artist whose impact crosses borders and cultures.
